As one of the first sexual assault programs
established in the country, the DC Rape Crisis Center has been serving the
District of Columbia since 1972. Our
trained and dedicated volunteers provide help to survivors of sexual violence
on our 24-hour crisis hotline. The
Center also offers free individual and group counseling services to a variety
of sexual assault survivors, their families, and friends.
While helping rape survivors regain control of their lives, the Center
heightens public awareness and sensitivity to the issue of violence against
women. Through community
awareness and self-defense programs, the Center is constantly effecting
institutional change.
Last Year the Center...
-
counseled
over 700 new clients
-
answered over 2,000 hotline calls
-
made over 30 community presentations
each month to a total audience of over 11,000 individuals
As part of our internship program, you could
help us reach even more people this year, as well as earn High School or
College credit.

Mission
Statement
The DC Rape Crisis Center is dedicated to
creating a world free of sexual violence.
The Center works to effect social change
through community outreach, education, and legal and public policy
initiatives. It helps survivors
and their families heal from the aftermath of sexual violence through crisis
intervention, counseling and advocacy.
Committed to the belief that all forms of
oppression are linked, the Center values accessibility, cultural diversity and
the empowerment of women and children.
The DC Rape Crisis Center is always in search of bright young interns
interested in pursuing our mission to end sexual violence in our communities.
It is only with the help of our interns, volunteers and supporters,
that we are able to keep moving toward a world free from sexual violence
against women. The Center seeks
diversity in its interns and volunteers, and individuals of all racial and
ethnic backgrounds, ages, classes, sexual orientation, and physical abilities
are encouraged to become involved. In
addition, all interns should be comfortable working with a diverse group of
people and be open to learning about the issues of sexual violence.
Interns should have good listening skills, as well as strong oral and
written communication skills. The
Center offers internships in the following areas:
Counseling
and Advocacy
Interns in this area are responsible for
collecting service-relate counseling data and scheduling hot line shifts for
the Center’s volunteers. Interns
also work on a variety of projects, including outreach programs within the
community, research, organizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April), and
improving protocol procedures.
Development
In this department, interns have the
opportunity to work with the Development Director in researching potential
organizational donors and coordinating events.
Interns also participate in an array of fundraising projects, such as
direct mailings and phone-a-thons.
Community
Education
Interns’ primary responsibilities in this
area revolve around offering presentations to schools, businesses and other
organizations about sexual assault. Interns
also schedule speaking engagements, plan The Take Back the Night, march and
rally, and assist in doing outreach in the community.
Administration/Public
Relations/Event Planning
Administration interns have the opportunity to
be “behind the scenes”, taking on projects that pull together DCRCC’s
different departments to create a single organization. Projects include
assisting the Internship Coordinator with the Intern Program, planning for the
annual Gala, as well as database management.
