When Trauma and Eating Disorders Intersect: Clinical Implications and Treatment Strategies for Adult Survivors with Eating Disorders

| Description: | This workshop will address the research, clinical implications, and strategies for the treatment of adult survivors of physical, sexual, and emotional traumas who are struggling with eating disorders. In the first part of the workshop, the presenter will provide an overview of the symptomotology of eating disorders and discuss strategies to assess for the presence of eating disorders. Also, an overview of trauma as a significant risk factor for eating disorders will be discussed. Next, research examining the link among trauma, eating disorders, and comorbid psychopathology, including mood disturbances, PTSD, and substance use, will be presented. Third, the presenter will discuss the challenges of treating eating disorders in the context of psychopathology resulting from past traumas and discuss treatment strategies. Treatment strategies will include approaches based on cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, dialectical-behavioral, and psychodynamic theoretical models. |
