Facts about Sexual Abuse for Sexual Minorities
- Lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender and queer survivors of sexual violence may be victimized by someone of the same or opposite sex, by an intimate partner, acquaintance or stranger.
- Intimate partner violence often includes sexual assault. LGBTQ identified individuals experience intimate partner violence at the same rate as the heterosexual community; about 25 percent of relationships are violent.
- Sexual assault occurring during the coming out period for an LGBTQ survivor can impact their perception and experience of the assault, especially if it was a bias attack. It may add to the confusion or shame that a survivor experiences after an assault.
